Requirements To Become A Paralegal
A Paralegal or legal assistant is someone who works under the direct supervision of a lawyer. As a matter of fact, they are gaining more popularity nowadays, as most of the businesses try to lower their cost by hiring legal assistants instead of lawyers to perform tasks for their clients such as analyzing documents, investigating and interviewing people, preparing briefs for hearing in court; they also help prepare drafts for contracts, wills and other important legal documents. Though they perform almost everything, there are some things that they are not allowed to do such as asking legal fees, give legal advice, and most importantly, they cannot represent clients in court on behalf of their employer. Paralegals can be found in different institutions, but most of them work in law firms, companies’ legal departments and other government offices. In order for someone to become a very good paralegal, he or she should possess most of the lawyers’ abilities and skills. Most employers look for someone who has first-rate analytical proficiency and the flexibility in doing research online.
A paralegal should be very much adept and knowledgeable in using the computer because, in the course of the case they will be working most of the time with official files, and therefore should be properly catalogued and organized. They should also possess above average written and verbal communication skills because they will have to file and present their findings verbally to their superiors together with the clients. Because of the nature and sensitivity of their work, they should observe and practice strong ethical and moral discretion.
