Paralegal Degrees, Courses & Schools – 5 Steps to Choose the Right Paralegal Education Program

1. Decide the location you want to work in.

The type and extent of work that paralegals are allowed to do is governed by the jurisdiction in which they work. Different jurisdictions have different rules – often very different rules – regarding paralegals. Therefore a key decision for anyone intending to work as a paralegal is to be appropriately qualified to work in their preferred location.
So, give some thought to where you would want to work, both initially and throughout your career. Then, as most jurisdictions impose their own registration or certification requirements to work within their boundaries – research which educational qualifications are best suited to gaining your chosen jurisdiction’s registration or certification approval.

2. Decide the type of employer you want to work for.

Decide if you see yourself working for a big law firm or for the government? If you have a particular employer or field of employment in mind – research which qualifications they prefer candidates to have.

3. Decide what your long term career plans are.

Will you be content to stay as a paralegal for your entire career? In the US most paralegals work as an assistant to one or more Attorneys, while still have a large degree of autonomy and responsibility in their daily work. Others see paralegal work as a stepping stone to becoming an Attorney themselves, or taking a paralegal qualification as step to becoming a legal specialist in their existing field of work – as a legal nurse consultant, for instance. If you are seeking a paralegal qualification as a stepping stone, remember that being overqualified could be just as much as problem as being under qualified, and also puts a needless burden on your finances and time. Research which qualifications best match your career ambitions.

4. Make a short list of schools that offer the qualifications you need.

Steps 1, 2 and 3 should have a given you a good idea of exactly which qualification(s) will help you get to your ideal job – if not, revisit the first 3 steps until you have a clear idea. Now research which schools will provide your target qualifications.

5. Choose the school that best matches your personal needs.

Now select the best match from your short list using these three criteria – budget, reputation and personal circumstances ( You may want to give each of the three points a weighting relative your own personal situation- i.e. is budget your main concern?) .

Budget – are the courses the school offers within your financial constraints? Paralegal graduates get paid well, but you still need get value for money from your course.

Reputation – is the school held in high regard by employers, students, graduates and professional bodies? Conduct research using online forums etc. to find out what these people have to say about their experience of the school.

Personal Circumstances – for instance, does the school present the classes at a time and place that suits you? Do the lectures fit in with any other commitment you may have? Can you get to the campus? Is your computer and internet connection adequate for any online content? What additional time does the school recommend you set aside for personal study – do you have enough ‘quality’ free time available to meet the needs of the course?

These five simple steps are your guide to finding the course that best fits your needs. If things aren’t clear in any of the steps, chances are going back to one or two steps and revisiting the instructions there will get things right back on track.
